Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in NYC

Of 17 children admitted to a New York City hospital with multisystem inflammatory syndrome related to COVID-19, all had fever and most had gastrointestinal symptoms, rash, or conjunctivitis. At presentation, 3 were hypoxic and 13 had shock. Over 80% had abnormal findings on chest radiography, some 60% had nonspecific ST/T-wave abnormalities on electrocardiogram, and about a third had moderate or more severe ventricular dysfunction on echocardiography. All had elevated inflammatory markers, and most required ICU admission. All 17 children were discharged home after a mean 7 days in the hospital. Writing in JAMA, the researchers note that “the occurrence of abnormal cardiac findings suggests the need for long-term surveillance.”
